Sometimes it’s nice to see the flowers of another region. Nick, our MN GreenCorps member recently took a trip to New Jersey. Lucky enough, it was right when fields upon fields of Swamp Rose Mallows were in bloom! Here’s some photos of the “Crimson-eyed Mallow”. If your ever out east in August be sure to keep an eye out!
And did you know the Maritime climate of New Jersey supports Hibiscus Trees?
Lastly, New Jersey is home to an “Adopt a Highway: Wildflower” Program. Large stretches of freeway are speckled with wildflowers thanks to the initiatives of the NJ Department of Transportation. Roadsides contain hundreds of thousands of acres often abandoned or filled with filler non-native grasses such as Brome…. why not make them ecologically valuable? There’s a “Roadsides for Wildlife” program here in Minnesota, but we can’t help be curious to the possibilities of road tolls…
